Are alt lines worse odds than the main line?
Not as a rule, but check both. bet365 often posts the same bet twice: over 4.5 receptions on its over/under and 5+ on its ladder. We found 1,194 of these pairs where both prices had been updated within five minutes of each other. The two paid the same on 80% of NFL pairs, 83% of college and 69% of baseball. When they differed, the NFL ladder paid less 30 times and more 19, college 8 and 12, and baseball 165 and 91, with total bases at 29 against 7.
The usual advice is that alt lines are a bad deal. It is hard to check, because the way alt lines are posted makes the obvious measurement impossible.
So we measured the one thing that can be measured cleanly.
Why the usual question cannot be answered from a ladder
“Do alt lines have more juice” is a question about margin, and margin needs both sides of a bet priced: the over and the under at the same number. A ladder only posts overs: 50+, 60+, 70+. There is no under to set against the 70+ rung, so its margin cannot be read off the page.
What can be done is a straight comparison. bet365 posts an over/under for many players and a ladder for the same stat, and the ladder often has a rung on exactly the over/under’s number. Over 4.5 receptions and 5+ receptions are the same bet. If the ladder is the worse deal, it should show up right there.
The count: 1,194 bets posted twice
From one pull of bet365’s prices on Friday 25 September 2026, we took every pair where the over/under and a ladder rung were the same bet, read in the same pull, and kept the pairs whose two prices had both been updated at bet365 within five minutes of each other.
| Sport, pairs | Same price | When different: ladder paid less / more |
|---|---|---|
| NFL, 249 | 200 (80%) | 30 / 19 |
| College, 116 | 96 (83%) | 8 / 12 |
| MLB, 829 | 573 (69%) | 165 / 91 |
Usually it is one price. Four NFL pairs in five paid the same either way.
When the two differed, football was mixed: in the NFL the ladder paid less 30 times and more 19, in college 8 and 12. Baseball was not mixed: the ladder paid less on 165 pairs and more on 91. The typical difference, either way, was small, about 2% to 2.5% of the payout.
Where it tilted
Broken out by baseball market, the tilt is mostly in a few places:
| MLB market, pairs | Ladder paid less | Ladder paid more |
|---|---|---|
| Total bases, 151 | 29 | 7 |
| RBIs, 84 | 26 | 8 |
| H+R+RBI, 154 | 46 | 25 |
| Hits, 143 | 37 | 20 |
| Runs, 153 | 12 | 13 |
| Home runs, 123 | 14 | 12 |
| Strikeouts, 21 | 1 | 6 |
The rest of each market’s pairs paid the same either way.
On total bases and RBIs, the ladder was the lower of the two prices three to four times as often as the higher. On runs and home runs it was even.
The big ones, both ways
The median gap was small. The tails were not, and they are the reason to look every time.
| Bet | Over/under | Ladder |
|---|---|---|
| Jalen Nailor, 2+ catches | -140 | -350 |
| Alvin Kamara, 3+ catches | -115 | -230 |
| Travis Kelce, 5+ catches | +100 | -115 |
| D’Andre Swift, 3+ catches | +125 | +180 |
| D’Andre Swift, 70+ rush yards | -115 | +120 |
| Michael Busch, 2+ total bases | +220 | +165 |
| Michael Conforto, 1+ hit | -170 | -110 |
Same book, same bet, same pull, both prices updated within minutes. Swift’s 70+ rushing yards paid +120 on the ladder and -115 as over 69.5. Nailor’s two catches cost -350 on the ladder and -140 on the over/under.
We do not know why the two disagree when they do, and we are not going to guess. The practical point does not depend on the reason.
What to do with this
When your book posts both at your number, look at both. It takes seconds, and on roughly one pair in four they were different.
Off the main number, compare across books instead. A number that is an alternate at one book is often another book’s main line, posted near even money with an under beside it. Which rungs a ladder carries, and what each step pays, is in what are alt lines in player props.
On a player’s page in the Lab, bet365’s over/under and its ladder rungs are listed together, and the arrows under the chart step through every number priced. Travis Kelce’s receptions is a good one to start with: over 4.5 at the books, and 4+, 6+, 7+ on the ladder.
What we counted
One pull of bet365’s prices on Friday 25 September 2026, the snapshot built at 22:53 UTC, covering NFL week 3, the Saturday college slate and that night’s MLB games. A pair is an over/under price and a ladder rung for the same player, stat and number, read in the same pull, with both prices last updated at bet365 within five minutes of each other. Pairs from different pulls were left out (280 baseball pairs), and so were pairs whose two prices were updated further apart (387 more), because a price updated an hour before the other is not the same moment. The five-minute rule was added after review: of the first count’s 433 pairs with different prices, 108 had update times more than five minutes apart and 37 more than an hour.
bet365’s prices here are read from its Ontario app. Its prices in a US state can differ. The finding to take away is that the same bet can carry two prices at one book, not any single number in the tables.

Quick answers
Are alternate lines worse odds than the main line?
The same bet at the same book usually costs the same. We compared 1,194 bets bet365 posted both ways, each pair updated within five minutes of each other, and 869 of them (73%) paid identically. When the prices differed, the ladder version paid less more often, mostly in baseball.
Do alt lines have more juice?
Nobody can read that off a ladder, because a ladder posts only overs. The juice on a line needs both sides priced. What can be measured is whether the ladder charges more for the identical bet, and usually it does not.
Is 5+ receptions the same bet as over 4.5?
Yes. Five or more catches wins exactly when over 4.5 wins. On our board, Travis Kelce's was +100 as an over 4.5 and -115 as the 5+ rung, in the same pull of bet365's prices.
Which markets had the biggest difference?
Baseball total bases and RBIs. Of 151 total bases pairs, the ladder paid less on 29 and more on 7; of 84 RBI pairs, 26 against 8. In the NFL the largest single gaps were on receptions, in both directions.
Should I bet the ladder or the over/under?
When a book posts both at your number, look at both and take the higher price. It takes seconds, and on about 1 pair in 4 they were different.
